Basket Weaving: Level 1 - Punnet Basket
Humans have always made things. We are creative. Baskets are ubiquitous around the world. When we learn to make baskets together we are doing as our ancestors did, no matter where in the world they lived. We are learning to co-create with plants and the Earth in a way that our modern industrial society rarely requires. With the actions of our hands we can weave for utility or for meaning. Baskets can hold objects, memories, or space. They are as unique as each of us.
In this introductory class to basket weaving, students will learn the basics of working with basket reed to make their very own decorative punnet basket which is traditionally used to pick berries and other soft fruits (or felt balls like in the picture). No prior basketry or weaving experience is needed to learn this practical old-time craft. Students should be prepared to get their hands wet and wear clothes that can get messy! Students will learn the techniques of plain weave, squaring up, and lashed rim!
This class is open to ages 14+.
