Beginner Garment Sewing with Knits: Skyline Tee Sew-along

Kelly & Paula are modeling a cream and black Skyline TeeNever sewn with knit fabric before? Never fear! Learn to sew stretch knit fabrics on a regular old sewing machine (no serger necessary!) using stretch stitches and "faux overlock."

In this 4 session sew-along, we will assemble the Skyline Tee from Sew House Seven and learn a variety of helpful techniques applicable to a variety of sewing projects. Please make sure your schedule allows you to commit to these 4 sessions before signing up.

Garment making experience is not required, but students should be comfortable using a sewing machine for basic projects. If you have taken any of our sewing classes or camps before, you'll definitely be prepared!

If you are unfamiliar with determining your garment size and reading a sewing pattern, please take our class Understanding Sewing Patterns.

Supplies Needed:
  • This pattern is so fresh and new, it is currently only available in PDF form from Sew House Seven. The PDF version includes all sizes from 00-34, and can be printed at a copy shop or on your home printer and taped together.
  • Depending on the size and style of Skyline you choose, you will need to buy between 1.5 to 2 yards of 54" - 60" wide 4-way stretch knit fabric with at least 50% stretch and good recovery.
    • We recommend our Cotton Spandex Jersey for this pattern, as it fits all the requirements! (Plus it's part of our January Fabric Sale at 25% off until 1/31/24!)
    • Feel free to shop in person to get additional fabric recommendations!
  • You will also need to buy a spool of matching thread. Choose the Pick My Thread option, and we will find a thread that matches your fabric.
  • If you prefer to buy your fabric in person, be sure to shop with us early enough that you can wash & dry your fabric before class.
  • Your class fee also includes use of sewing machine and sewing tools in class, but do feel free to bring your own sewing machine or tools if you are more comfortable using them (or would like to become more comfortable using them!)

BEFORE CLASS:
  • Purchase, wash, and dry your fabric
  • Purchase the Skyline Tee PDF pattern from Sew House Seven and print it out.
  • Cut your fabric in the pattern pieces corresponding to your size and selected style. NOTE: there are SO many options for this pattern, there are loads of pattern pieces. Pay attention as you only need cut out one each of the front, back, and neckline pieces (and two sleeves) -- just be sure they all go together. If you have questions just let us know!
  • If you are unfamiliar with determining your garment size and reading a sewing pattern, please take our class Understanding Sewing Patterns.
  • If you need a space to cut fabric, or want a little guidance, you may attend Fabric Cutting Open Studio !

This class is open to ages 14+.
