Simple Shibori

In this class we will be doing “simple” shibori.  Instead of using an actual Indigo dye bath (very smelly) we will be using an Indigo Procion dye bath.  You will achieve the same basic effect as using Indigo, without the smell or the magic of watching it turn from green to dark blue as it oxidizes in the air. But it still comes out looking great!

Instructor PJ Conger will lead you through shibori techniques for two garments, a dish towel, and a scarf. In the class you will learn several resist techniques – clamping, sewing and wrapping. You will also learn how to mix the procion dye for the dye bath. After we practice these techniques, you get to choose how you want to work your garments and begin the process. Once wrapped, you will submerge your garment in the dye bath. You will leave with a garment you can wash at home after 6 hours of dye setting.

About Shibori:  Shibori is an ancient Japanese dyeing method using Indigo dye and resist patterns. The verb shiboru means "to wring, squeeze and press" in Japanese. Where there is a resist element introduced to an all white garment, such as clips, sewn objects, or waxed thread, the garment stays white. Put into a bath of indigo dye, the garment becomes a deep indigo blue, and the resist areas stay white. This produces bold, stark and beautiful patterns on the garment.
